This one has been a long time coming. I’ve been trying to listen to a lot more new music, and this mix was my first attempt at a musical narrative structure, having each piece relate musically to the one before. I’m really happy with it too, it turned out to be one of the more eclectic mixes I’ve made.
So KiLoutou – the awesome Fijian dishwasher at work – asked me to put some music on his iPod for him. I said sure, without quite knowing what I was getting into. He then hands me three sheets of paper that look something like so:
And says “Youbringbacktomorrowyes?” (Because there’s no punctuation besides question marks in Fiji)
I didn’t get it done that night, it’s actually taken me three days. The music is hard to find, except – oddly enough – on YouTube.  a quick search found a Video to MP3 web-based converter that, despite some really tasteless, poorly targeted ads (apparently there are thousands of Russian Women waiting for me) did a great job at unexpectedly high speeds, if with questionable legality.
Listening to the music Loutou had me download for him, I can get why it’s not easy to find. It’s exactly what you would expect from an island nation, slow, repetitive. A lot of it, at least in this sample, seems to have been played on a 1980s Yamaha Keytar set to “Organ”. Still, it’s very chill and relaxed, (which could be said of most Fijian people I’ve met) and in the course of this ordeal I’ve discovered a few songs that I really like. Here’s a few of my favorites, let me know what you think:
Police Public Relations of Fiji – Ko Ira Na Vuda (1)
Toso Mai Bulou – Senivetakula – Sigidrigi
Xyde Dj vs Veivueti ni Domo ni Savu Cavacava
Kabu Ni Delai Kade – Au Kerea Meu Bau Sereka
DJ King ft Salusalu vono kei vuna – Bula Marau Rmx
Mataka vou kei Monasavu – Yali na Dina
1 I haven’t been able to figure out if this is supposed to be an ironic band name, or if it’s the actual PR department of Fiji’s Police…)
I know this is kind of random, but I wanted to share it somehow
Sorry guys, I don’t have anything to put up today, I’ll try to get a double-height page done for Thursday…
Hey all, want to share some stuff!
First, I had some experiences this week involving a Piece of My Artwork, a Creative Commons License, and a Neonazi. Read about it on the Metal Snail Blog
The Name Game is a video game webcomic that I actually get! it has a lot of workplace humor, similar to CitK, so you guys might like it too!
One of my favorite games lately is “Deepak Fights Robots” By Tom Sennett . The music for the game is by Family Funktion and the Sitar Jams, a band that is better heard than described
Rutabega is a comic about a Chef in a Ledgend Of Zelda-esque world. So far it is lots of fun and adorables.
Breeders is an in development ecosystem simulation that goes for the bizarre. It’s neat to see all the simple parts work together to make a giant, thriving machine.
Looking through my hard drive I found an old comic I worked on a few years ago. At the time I had a nasty habit of starting something, getting bored with it, then stopping. This was a bit of an exception in that I managed to finish an “issue”. (For me that was twelve pages) It’s the first part of a Cyberpunk/Space Opera story that has haunted my brain and sketchbooks since 2002 (Where it started as a TaleSpin Fanfic) After this issue, I decided I wanted to reboot it as hard scifi, and it was the frustration of research on top of drawing, writing, and working my day job (At the time I was doing ten hours a day without weekends) that eventually led me to try making a comic about something simpler, And that was Cats in the Kitchen.
Anyway, here is “Tales of an Interstellar Truck Stop: Hunted Wolf”, Volume One, Issue One: “Prologue”. It’s wordy, and doesn’t make much sense, there are severe logic and science errors and the lettering is atrocious (Though it’s better than early Cats in the Kitchen, so apparently I got worse…) However, all that aside, it IS kind of awesome, so I wanted to share it with you.
(I should point out that Rack111 was a free webhost that was more than a bit shady, and also doesn’t exist anymore. Having money for real hosting was the best thing that has ever happened to my internet career…)
